STOTT® PILATES INSTRUCTION

Pilates is a series of exercises focusing on the stabilizers of the torso, including those of the spine (neck, upper,mid, and lower back), pelvis, rib cage and shoulders. Once the stablilizers (deep muscles of the torso) are found and developed, they are challenged by a series of movements of the spine, arms, and legs.

An hour Essential Mat Class starts with laying on your back, finding spine, pelvic, and shoulder stabilizers, and challenging them with small, controlled movements of the arms and legs and spinal flexion. Then you lay face down to develop mid and upper back strength. Careful attention is placed on lower back over use and stabilization. The hour progresses according to the needs of the group into articulation of the spine into flexion and rotation. A series of choreographed exercises are learned and broken down as needs arise. Laying sideways for leg work and on all fours for upper weight bearing are also addressed during this hour session. The class ends with recap of simple exercises that can be performed at home. There is no stretching or "cool down" at the end, as these occur throughout the hour during the movements and in between.

The Intermediate Mat Class focuses more on endurance, strength, and coordination, as the exercises are performed with more flow, and increased repetitions. Although the hour has staple exercises covered, new ones are introduced for variety.

Pilates Equipment Classes are performed on the Reformer, Chair, and Cadillac. With a 10 minute warm-up on the floor to ensure abdominal, and upper back, and not lower back stabilization. The class is limited to 7 people and all are performing the same exercises. One will find more emphasis on arm, leg, and hip strength, although the deep stabilizers are still working. You will find these classes fun, always changing, challenging at any level, and compelling to attend.
